When Chef Bruce Moffett opened this eatery in 2009, the name was a nod to the dearth of good food in the neighborhood. While that's no longer the case, Good Food is still worth a visit for its globally influenced small plates, which draw inspiration from locations as varied as Italy and Korea. Try the steamed buns, made with five-spiced rubbed pork belly, hoisin, and pickled vegetables. It had us at “cheese cloud,” a fluffy pile of fluffy Parmesan or pecorino that customers can add to pasta for $3. Butterworth’s drumming style brought a new dynamic to the band’s sound, contributing to their evolving musical direction. Aside from his work with Good Charlotte, Dean has an extensive career as a session drummer, playing with a variety of artists across different genres. I’ve always felt that we’re a band that’s a bit tough to put into any one genre. If you listen back to our early records, we played all kinds of styles. And a record like Good Morning Revival, there were some dance songs on that album, and that came out in 2007, before EDM broke, before pop went rhythmic. And then we also had the collaboration with Avenged Sevenfold on that album, on the song “The River.” It’s like, who would have ever thought to put Avenged and Good Charlotte together?

So I think for us, our longevity can be attributed to just sticking it out and following our instincts. If you work your ass off and you just don’t quit, you’ll probably find some sort of longevity. I don’t think you get anywhere and go, “Okay, we’re here.” The journey’s the destination. When Good Charlotte first came on the scene in the late Nineties and early 2000s you were firmly identified as a pop-punk band. MARTIN I’ve been playing PRS since I was, like, 16, and so I used a lot of PRS stuff.

I was blown away by how those guys grew up poor and then they celebrated having all these nice things and all this success. Because for me, my number-one goal was that I wanted to buy my mom a house. I wanted to put her in a nice car and a nice home and not have people look at her like she was a poor person, which was something we experienced as kids.

Joel Madden, the lead vocalist of Good Charlotte, has been with the band since its inception in 1996. His distinct voice has been a defining feature of the band’s sound across all their albums. Alongside his brother Benji, Joel has been a constant presence in the band, contributing to the writing and creative direction of their music. It’s a lot darker and heavier, it’s much more of a straight-up rock record. A lot of bands maybe get softer when they got older but we thought it’d be fun to go hard.

I think a lot of young bands, when they achieve success, everything’s awesome. But then the first moment things take a step backwards or don’t go like they think they’re going to go, they go into panic mode and start pointing fingers and placing blame and things start to crumble and fall apart. But the four of us have been together in the band for almost 20 years, and our drummer, Dean, has been in the band for 12 or 13 years now. So we’ve been through a lot of stuff together and we have a pretty tight bond. We respect each other within the band as well as outside of the band. But when we show up and get together we’re all there playing for the same reason.

Besides the pasta itself, the restaurant’s dishes include produce grown in the area and locally sourced meats. While it could be easy to fill up on starters, make sure to leave room for the squid ink linguine with chorizo and Carolina shrimp or the beef and pork bolognese. A “rock n’ roll ramen shop” is a far cry from the Southern-inspired menus you’ll find in numerous eateries across Charlotte—and that’s the point. Opened in the spring of 2015, Chef Michael Shortino’s Futo Buta continues to serve residents and visitors of the Queen City creative takes on ramen as well as other Japanese dishes. In addition to ramen bowls made with pecan-smoked pork belly, the menu includes Lowcountry-smoked pork belly buns, spicy tuna rice crispy squares, and duck confit donburi. Developing a menu of “modern interpretations of Southern classics” is almost a Catch-22; classics are classics for a reason, yet reinvention is often necessary to make a dish feel new and different.

While new restaurants tend to get all the hype, the older establishments—the ones that have been greeting guests for decades—quietly and steadfastly serve their well-loved dishes day in and day out. Mama Ricotta’s, an Italian stalwart in Midtown, has been open for about three decades, and if you’re craving a chicken parm sandwich or a plate of penne alla vodka, it won’t disappoint. Part of Charlotte’s FS Dining Group, Mama Ricotta's sister restaurant, Little Mama’s, opened in 2020. This airy, bright restaurant inside the historic Dunhill Hotel in Uptown serves modern Southern fare for brunch, lunch, and dinner. Feast on fresh scones and regional classics like a bacon and pimento cheese omelet for breakfast.
